I added this book to my kindle because it sounded like it was going to be a fun read. In its defense, the majority of the book delivers what it promises. The book is fun and a fast read but it also suffers from a tremendously stupid ending. The kind of ending that makes you scratch your head and ask out loud "what was the author thinking?" If you can get past or just skip the ending all together then this book might be for you. As for me, I wish I had known that before I started because I would never have started reading because if the book doesn't have an ending or an ending that works, it's not worth reading.

It was a struggle to finish and then the ending was only a tease for the next book...a book I won't read.
When I first began reading this book, I ended up having to put it down. However, once I picked it up again, I couldn't out it Down !! It was one thing , after another, after another... One situation turned into a bunch more , and I LOVED every word !! Poor Jake is injured in an MRI machine that was supposed to ( perhaps) tell him how long he has to live due to a recent re-diagnosis of cancer . He can feel how his body is changing, and deep down , he knows it's not good news. Plus , he doesn't like close , confined spaces, so he Really doesn't want to be there. Of course, as it happens, there is an earthquake at the very time his procedure happens, and something goes terribly wrong. My neck actually twitched as I was reading this , so powerful are Richard Bard's words !!
As a result of the technological interruption of the MRI's true path, Jake gets zapped ,and somehow ,something changes in the way that Jakes neurons fire inside him and changes his brain around . He is a pilot , so he is Smart. But now he is Super Smart . Like he can go to Vegas and clean up SMART !! He gets pulled into some wild jihadist conspiracy, and somehow figures out what the Real endgame is supposed to be , if only he can do it Fast enough, and if he's strong enough, and if he can figure out a way to push the boundaries of his new brain , before he dies !!
Richard Bard will keep you on the edge of your seat , and leave you panting for MORE please, and thank you !
In this book somewhere in the midst of a very dire, tricky situation the mind of Jake is described as being synesthetic. Now, this is not a word I am familiar with, nor does my trusted Concise Oxford Dictionary. My guess is that it describes the ability of the mind of making sense of patterns.
That may be part of the unique person Jake has become. But that is only ascribing part of the story. Jake also has superior numbers crushing capabilities. In this he is much like the vaunted mentats of Frank Herbert's Dune saga. And mentats is yet another word not included in my dictionary.
So, what has all this to do with Brainrush? Simple. Richard Bard twisted the phenomenon of idiot savants (how I detest that ignominious misnomer!) Into creating a totally new type of hero that is difficult to define. Yet Jake is exactly the kind of character needed to deal with the astounding and exhilarating fast paced story that unfolds in the pages of this book with overtures of the paranormal and even alien overview.
Small wonder the acclaim this series gathered so far!
Besides, it is a damn good entertaining thriller! Enjoy!
How much do you want to know about another person's thoughts and feelings? Is that a gift or a dilemma? This story is bizarre, mysterious and often unpredictable. Male bonding is featured. Yet there are times with female interactions that are romantic and humorous. Cancer is in the background of the plot. Scenes of Venice and it's carnival are beautifully described. Action is often detailed on martial arts. Central theme is telepathy and it's effects on the possessor and their interpersonal contacts. Last parts of the book were protracted and redundant. It was detailed with military weapons and multiple characters. I struggled to finish it. Maybe a movie of the various locales would have been better.
You know, I read some of the reviews that it was too unbelievable, too whatever - but it's fiction. I truly enjoyed the heck out of it! Action, adventure, some wild situations, the ending with the cave, interesting, and for me, a possibility that it could be, or could happen. We never know what this world holds, but I really enjoyed this book - it entertained me for the time I read it and found myself holding my breath during the intense moments, of which there were many! I enjoyed it so much that I've bought the rest of the series on my kindle - ah well! So I will be staying up late, reading the rest of this series! Loved it! Thanks for the great book! I am always impressed with the ideas some of you folks come up with!
Just ok for me.

I've read the other reviews just GUSHING praise for this book/author and all I can think is y'all need to get out more. There is no way this is in league with truly great authors (Steveson, Card, Lawhead or even contemporary good writers like Grisham).

The character devolpment was weak... of course all his friends would be spec ops. Of course the dizzy blonde waitress would be a Kung fu master. Of course he would be invincible. Of course the bad guy is a maniacal Muslim terrorist. I mean it was just weak characters, little devolpment and wholly predictable.

Story line was somewhat compelling but disjointed. I see how we got from point A to F but there were some serious leaps made that required the reader to suspend disbelief.

I'd like to see where the story heads but not for 3.99 a pop. This is standard Unlimited fare IMHO.
