The Shadow Reader Sandy Williams Books
This is one of my favorite series! I just re-read this book and I still love it. McKenzie Lewis is a human with the ability to see Fae and read the shadows. The Fae live in The Realm but most of them have the ability to fissure around the Realm and our world. Most Fae have the ability to keep themselves hidden when they decide while in our world. When the Fae are in our world their skin show chaos lusters and when humans are in the Realm the same thing happens. Shadow Readers are very rare and McKenzie is pretty much the best. For the past 10 years, she's been working with the King and the Court against the rebels. She's worked really close with Kyol, the King's sword master and friend, for all those years. She's been in love with him and he's felt the same way but he did his best to not let things get too far. The rebels know who she is now and where to get her so they kidnap her. Aren is the rebel leader who kidnaps her.McKenzie has lost so much through the years because of her gift. Her parents thought she was crazy and tried to get her help and now they are no longer in her life. She only really has one friend in the human world with Paige and she knows that McKenzie does strange things. She's tried to graduate college over and over again but always something stands in the way. She had dreams of finally graduating college and retiring to become a regular person. Now she's been kidnapped and she doesn't know if she'll survive this. Aren and the other rebels open her eyes to many things and they teach her the Fae language. She starts to have feelings for Aren but she still cares for Kyol and doesn't know if he's really who she thinks he is.
Kyol is a great and wonderful Fae. He sticks to his morals and does everything he can for him and his people. He's tried his best to help the King and to try to help all the Fae in the kingdom. But he's been in love with McKenzie since he met her but he knew that human and Fae weren't supposed to have romantic relationships. He thought he was doing the right thing for both of them.
Aren is the face of the rebellion pretty much. He's not the one trying to take leadership away from the King but he's doing his best to help the right Fae take over. He's smart and powerful. McKenzie changes so many things for him. He's tried to find her for years because of how powerful she has made the King and the court. He never expected to actually care about her. He would never let the things that Kyol allowed to keep them apart.

The Shadow Reader Sandy Williams Books Reviews
This was an unusual read. The fantasy world took a little getting used to though it was somewhat similar to Richelle Mead's Dark Swan series.
The main character was a 26 year old Shadow Reader, a human able to see through illusions and track fae when they travel. The plot revolves around a civil war between fae.
She starts out as a loyal Court Shadow Reader, and is kidnapped by the rebels.
This was where the story started to lose me a little. Primarily because while the character was 26 it would have worked better if she was 16. She was a little too naive, and also flaky when it came to her supposedly deep, 10 year old love for one of the court fae.
Also the two male love interests form a sort of Twilight like love triangle where two gorgeous and wonderful leaders of the fae throw themselves at this one human woman without any real deep conversations or hints of why they feel so strongly about her. This is particularly true of the rebel leader, since he doesn't have the long history with her to justify his feelings.
So it is an NA book which reads like a YA Urban Fantasy, and without the kind of relationship development which might have made me ready to read more even without any "adult" content. A small part of me wanted to snark that these men would have thrown themselves at any human woman, and she would have been willing regardless of who the fae was...it seemed that way at times focusing more on the interaction of their magic then on the individuals involved.
But even with that it wasn't a bad book, it had interesting side characters, and the plot developed in a reasonable fashion.
The main issue was that a first person book relies on you relating to and understanding the main character, and here that aspect fell short for me. I just like my heroines strong, independent, and more an asset to her allies than a liability.
For ten years, McKenzie has been in love with Kyol. She has also been the fae kings Shadow Reader, looking into portals and being able to tell the king where one the fae has gone. She doesn’t know the politics of the fae kingdom, she only knows the king needs her help. She has gladly given it, risking everything in our realm to help them save theirs. Now McKenzie is caught in a war, one Kyol has for the last ten years kept her out of. The rebels have found her, planning to use her. Kyol will do anything to get her back. The main rebel strategist Aren, would do anything to turn her to the rebels side. McKenzie just wants to survive.
McKenzie is a character that I can get behind, cheering for her the whole time. She tries to be logical- sometimes even a little too logical. Ten years is a long time to wait for someone to act on love. She knows that Kyol and her can’t be together, she does try to move past her feelings for him. When the rebels present their story, she remains true to the king. She attributes her attraction to Aren to Stockholm syndrome. She fights back- taking no prisoners.
Aren is a rebel with a cause- survival of his people. He stays true to the cause the whole time. The thing I like about him the most though is that he follows his instincts. He trust his decisions to work out in the end. He is attracted to McKenzie yet knows that she loves another. He point blank tells Kyol that he now has competition. I mean who does that? I enjoy the chemistry between the two.
The world building and secondary characters are pretty incredible. This is a book that is fast paced and entertaining. It also allows you to see both perspectives on the war- which is interesting. There were very little questions left at the end. Thank goodness for no cliffhangers. Yeah there is a bit of a love triangle (so if you avoid them- you have been warned). This love triangle is different than others- I can’t really explain it though.
