This is an alternative history novel, where Great Britain has surrendered to Germany. The treaty provides for the British keeping their own government, although compliant with Nazi policy. The book revolves about several characters who are in the Resistance and another man whom they are trying to protect. He is in an insane asylum but has knowledge of the American atomic bomb project, which could make serious problems for the Germans. As time moves on, the Nazis increase their influence over British government, for example, the British deporting Jews to Nazi concentration camps. The Gestapo and British internal security also begin hunting down the main characters, who must flee. Excellent development of characters and plot, but it drags a bit. Yes, I recommend it. If not outstanding, Dominion is still a very good read.

This is the best alternate history novel I have read. Actually I haven’t read many of them. As C. J. Samson says, people who are fascinated by history frequently think about “what ifs.” For me, however, the idea of alternate histories has always been better in the concept than in the execution. I read “Fatherland” almost 25 years ago and was disappointed. I have tried reading a couple of Harry Turtledove’s books, but they are actually more science fiction or fantasy than alternate history. No doubt there are a few other good ones out there, but I’m not inclined to spend time searching for them. Dominion, however, is simply a very well written book. It was hard to put down. The characters were sufficiently well drawn and the writing compelling. It would make an excellent movie, not even terribly expensive to make since much of the book takes place in the fog. Of course, for American audiences there would have to be a bit more said about where the U.S. ended up after the treaty between Britain and Germany, but that could be done easily. All in all, a very good book though short of a great one.
This is a conceptually brilliant novel that may have been a knock-out were it not so long. There are sequences that drag the plot down and rather than increasing the tension, take away from the impact of some of the more dramatic scenes.
This is a "what if" novel. What if, rather than fighting, Britain had caved in and appeased the Germans in 1940. The descriptions of London under Nazi control were compelling. The English, so cultured and polite, are shocked by German tactics. One scene where an important English executive is brought to an underground Nazi prison for questioning and demands an attorney stands out. The SS officers simply laugh at him and the culture clash is vivid and frighteningpat.
Of course, there is resistance from the English - Churchill is in hiding, a wanted war criminal. David Fitzpatrick, an Oxford educated Irishman, works in the English war office. Although he has told no one, his mother was Jewish and he has become active in the resistance movement, lying to co-workers and his wife about his activities.
Just outlining the plot of this novel would require many pages but suffice to say that the central theme is an attempt by the Nazis to learn the secrets of America's atomic weapons program and the English underground's determination to protect the one person in England who may have the answers they seek.
There are many secondary plots and characters. Although these secondary plots do add something to the novel, descriptions of the secondary characters' lives from birth to present day were distracting and, in the end, annoying. Many scenes could have been combined into one which would have made them more dramatic and moved the plot along, rather than bogging it down. The author knows his history and setting several scenes in total darkness due to a fog in 1952 that is still considered one of the worst air pollution disasters in history was a great idea - it just went on too long.
The concept had so much promise and none of it was fulfilled. As a drama it laboured to no consequence. To complete the text was a struggle but my long-standing reluctance to abandon a book prevailed.
What motivated me to read the musings that followed the text, I cannot fathom. It is not my habit. Fate perhaps? However, it was in the post-story segment that I found the inspiration to grant two of the three stars.
The segment on the Scottish Nationalist movement should be part of Scotland's school curriculum, and mandatory reading for those that have left school in ignorance of the practical reality of S.N.P. ambitions. I cannot recommend the book's storyline but I do commend the analysis and the warning. Anyone with concern for Scotland's future should heed and embrace it.
This is very much one of the better alternative historical novels along the lines of SS-GB and Fatherland. The construction of this alternate 1952 England under the Nazis is very well done, thorough and plausible. Characters are well drawn too. Raced through it despite its length of 600+ pages.
A couple of other reviewers found the book's weakness to be its length I don't completely agree as most of it is used to deepen the 'feel' and context of this different 1952 England, including many historical figures in very different, but mostly plausible, alternate roles. Plot I thought had a couple of minor holes related to the main characters (no spoilers) but the setting and atmosphere were convincingly rendered.
If you enjoyed Fatherland and SS-GB, you'll probably enjoy this as well.
I read Sansom’s “Winter in Madrid” which was a well written piece of literature. “Dominion” is not even a good entertainment – it is simply too repetitious, and the writing often falls flat. The alternative reality premise is a good one, and its implications well thought out what if Britain concluded a peace with Germany in 1940. A British professor comes into the knowledge which would speed Germany’s acquisition of the atomic bomb, which the isolationist U.S. already has. He is suicidal, but for reasons never explained, the U.S. is anxious to get him out of Britain rather than facilitate his death, and this is the main driver of the plot.
