Heron Park edition by CK Raggio Ninja Mel Glen Krisch Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I picked up Heron Park thinking it was going to be a typical police procedural, but it was anything but. A sadistic killer is on the loose and a great cast of characters are brought in to hunt him down. The characters are well drawn, the plotline is strong and the book is easy to read. What's not easy to read are the scenes where the author puts you both inside the head of the killer, yet also allows you to feel the abject fear of the victims. To allow the reader to get inside the head of both, and literally experience what they are going through, is testament to the ability and skill of the author.I won't lie. The scenes with the killer are terrifying - they're gory, they're graphic, disturbing, and chilling. There were moments I had to put the book down because I had to take a breath. The whole last half of the book moves fast and the question of "who" the killer is had me guessing the entire novel. This is a well written thriller worth the read, just don't read this before bed!

Heron Park edition by CK Raggio Ninja Mel Glen Krisch Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Paying homage to "Silence of the Lambs," suspense novel Heron Park is a variation on the genre with an axe-wielding serial killer who is sexually addicted to killing and aroused by mutilating and murdering women, but in an interesting twist, has trained a large dog to assist him. As in Lambs, the lead character is also a female law enforcement officer, this time an outdoorsy detective for the town of Babylon, New York on Long Island. A romance spark quickly develops between the detective and a visiting FBI agent with a backstory that has made him a pariah among his peers.
The remoteness of the crime scenes and the detective's own house, along with a dog rescue subplot, and very graphic murder and sexual arousal scenes drive the pace and atmosphere of the book. Right from the outset, the author offers up a couple of possibilities for the unnamed serial killer who refers to himself as "Timmy," as in Lassie's owner. Plot and subplot come together midway in an unexpected manner, however, and twists in the detective's personal life are not far behind. Recommended for those who like their whodunnits explicit and for fans of action-oriented police procedurals.
***I read a galley proof version of this in exchange for honest feedback.***
One can never know what makes a sadistic psychopath twitch, but Ms Raggio does a chilling job of putting you in the head of a monster in love with the retching sounds of a dying woman. This psychological murder mystery casts a net so sticky and horrific, it will twist you up in nightmares. You don't know who the killer is, where he is, or who he's after next, and this not-knowing madness keeps you guessing until the end.
Brilliantly crafted though the investigative viewpoints of detective Cassie and her would-be-could-be lover / FBI agent Rick, the mounting sense of dread really becomes menacing when the killer starts targeting the female investigators.
Few books have come close to capturing such an intimate portrait of a serial killer. The trips through his unhinged mind as he acts out his perverse desires are carried out in the same spirit as Buffalo Bill tucking his junk and dancing in his woman-skin suit. Shudder.
Then there's the killer's weapon choice. Bred and trained for one goal, his savage pack of dogs inflate his advantage to macabre proportions. I will never look at a large dog in a park the same. Any horror or crime buff might tell you the short-term emotional backlash of reading such a gritty thriller is a few lost nights of tossing in sweat-drenched sheets, but the long-term effect is the payoff. This book will leave you pondering the thought-provoking crime case and unforgettable characterization for a very long time.
Don't turn off the lights when reading this thriller, unless you thrive on having the bejesus scared out of you. Seriously.
I am an avid reader of police procedural books, thrillers, and anything cop-related, so I looked forward to following along while the law enforcement went after their perp in Heron Park. I enjoyed both Cassie and Izzie (the main team portrayed in this story). Getting to know Cassie on a personal level, along with her father and long-time friend, Sam, gave me an emotional attachment to her outside of the department. Add in a sexual tension with the handsome FBI agent assigned to the case, well; I was glued to the story.
And Izzie, she was an awesome secondary character as the partner in crime, tough enough to take on the macho male cop in the department, yet scared out of her wits when visiting the morgue. I liked that her tough female persona had many dimensions. The back and forth between cops while at the station was pretty on par too; I felt like I was there.
What got me, literally, was the way the author put me in the mindset of the serial killer, the jowls of the dog, and the victim on the receiving end. She vividly, and sometimes with graphic description necessary to make you feel the horror, set the scene. Here are a couple sentences in a scene that made me feel as if I was right there, and had me clenching the comforter
***Spoiler***
~~He'd pinched harder and harder, watching sweat pool in every crevice of her naked body. Thor's massive jaws constricting her neck silenced her screams.
While vivid with the description for the killer and the victim, she is equally enticing while introducing us to the evidence, and the horrific scenes of the crime. Through her choice of words, the author shows us the horror the serial killer is inflicting, the excruciating terror the victim is enduring, and the trials and tribulations of law enforcement through their search. No one is safe from this sadistic killer.
I look forward to the next set of sleepless nights I am sure to encounter when reading this author.
